I need your help if you can. Here's why: I get an email a few months back from a friend who wants to make a video game. Something to take up our free time and give us something fun to work on. Of course I sign on. The friend tells me that he will email me with more info later. Well, I wait and about a month ago I get an email. He tells me that he would like me to work on story mostly. That was fine, but he mentioned that anyone helping is welcome to make a character. Well, I have almost become a one man force in this thing(my bro and a friend are doing things too). Now, I have the most developed character and I am working on intros(did I mention it was a fighting game?). Well my character is French and should speak it I feel(knows English too). It seems that my exstensive two years of high school French wasn't enough to help me translate the phrase(s) I want. ^^ I used babel fish but that is such a literal translation it can come out bad sometimes. If anyone on here knows enough to help me out, I would be greatly appreciative. The line I want is this. "May my lord watch over you." Bable Fish: "Mai ma montre de seigneur au-dessus de vous." And if someone could help with the pronunciation too, that would help. Thanks in advance. ^^ |

I know French fairly well, I'm just wondering, do you want to write it so that French kids would understand it easily, or so that Americans who speak a bit of French understand it easily? The big difference is a French kid would have please written svp, because its easier; while a French speaking American would usually have Sil-vous-plais. And your character is a guy, right? I would probably start the phrase with "Mon Seignuer..." because both the character and the lord are males, and most importantly, I assume that by Lord you mean god, and so you should make sure Seignuer is capitalized... Its been nearly three years since I've taken a French class or used French, so its very dusty... I won an award for my French skills, but it annoyed me, because the award I won was for exceptional French vocabulary and sentence structure; but being a Junior in highschool, my French was the equivilant of an American first-grader's English, and for all I know France teaches their students more by that time... Anyways, I'm really good at pronounciation. |

Yes the character is a guy. He is talking about a supreme being but it isn't necessarily the Christian form of God. I would like it written out in full form as long as it is still how the French use it. Since he native to France, I would like it to be true to their language. But how it is written isn't as important as its pronunciation because it will be spoken. What I need it for is an intro, how characters in fighting games come out and talk trash or say some random line, that's what this is. Thanks for your help. ^^ |

So write it as it would be said, and then include a phonetical translation as well, gotcha. If you give me the other lines you want him to say I can get started on those as well... And with the "May my Lord watch over you." line, either way I can think of it, the may we use in English doesn't exist in Frence, not in the same way at least. In Frence it could only be expressed as please. I believe we could stretch it as "My Lord, watch over {blank}, please." The {blank} is where you'd have to decide the pronoun, as you wouldn't sound right, as the statment then sounds geared towards his Lord... Otherwise I could maybe have him telling his opponent that he has asked his lord to watch over him? It all depends how you want the context to sound. Is he addressing his opponent or his Lord? |

He was more of saying it to himself, but if I had to go with one I would say it was his opponent. If it is easier to have him addressing his lord that is fine too. That is odd they don't have a word for "may." Hmm...If you need to change it around alittle that is fine, just let me know about it. If you do "My lord, watch over {blank}, please." If possible can you fill it in with him, her, and them? That way I cover all bases for characters. |
